The Quinceañera is a time-honored event in Latino culture and is celebrated throughout Latin and Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and in Mexican-American communities in the U.S. It is both a religious and social event commemorating a girl’s fifteenth birthday and emphasizes the importance of family, society, and tradition in a young woman’s life. They can be considered something of a “coming of age” ritual. Quinceañeras are usually lavish affairs, similar to a debutante’s “coming out” ball, but are celebrated by people of all social strata. The event traditionally starts with a Mass attended by the girl, her immediate family, and godparents, which is then followed by a large reception featuring food, music, and dancing.

Quinceañeras require a lot of planning, and families start preparing up to a year in advance. Planning for a quinceañera is not unlike planning for a wedding, and, just like a wedding, the quinceañera dress is all important.
